Reseller fees in 2026 run from about 8% (Whatnot's US Sports category, marked unconfirmed below) to 15% (Amazon's referral fee in the categories we checked). In between, Mercari and Facebook Marketplace checkout orders charge 10%, and most eBay categories charge 13.6% plus a per-order fee. Amazon also adds a per-item or monthly plan fee. This page puts them all in one dated table, then runs the same $50 and $100 sale through each.
Every fee comes from the platform's own help or policy page (links at the bottom), checked 2026-10-02, except the figures marked † below, which we couldn't open directly and list as unconfirmed. The worked examples are our math on labeled example inputs. Fees change, so re-check before you list.
Fees are also only one cost. You still pay for the item, shipping, supplies and taxes. Reselling carries risk too: price drops, returns and unsold inventory. Results vary and nothing here is a guarantee of what you'll keep.
Reseller fees at a glance (checked 2026-10-02)
| Platform | Selling fee (US) | Other charges |
|---|---|---|
| eBay, most categories (vinyl falls here by our reading) | 13.6% up to $7,500 per item, 2.35% on the rest | $0.30 per order of $10 or less, $0.40 above. 250 free listings a month, then $0.35 each |
| eBay, trading cards and collectible card games | 13.25% up to $7,500 per item, 2.35% on the rest | Same per-order fee and listing allowance |
| Mercari | 10% | Free to list. No payment-processing fee on listings created or updated since Jan 6, 2025 |
| Facebook Marketplace (orders paid through Meta's checkout) | 10%, $0.80 minimum | See the Facebook note below for what the policy doesn't cover |
| Amazon | Referral fee: 15% in Media, Toys & Games, Sports & Outdoors and "everything else" | $0.99 per item on the Individual plan, or $39.99 a month on Professional. Media items add a $1.80 closing fee |
| Discogs † | 9%, $0.10 minimum, $150 maximum per item | Free to list. Payment processing (PayPal) is separate |
| TCGplayer | 10.75% commission for Level 1-4 marketplace sellers, with a $75 commission cap (up from $50). It was 10.25% until Feb 10, 2026 | Transaction fee of 2.5% + $0.30 † |
| Whatnot † | 8% commission, US Sports category, Standard tier | 2.9% + $0.30 payment processing |
A few notes on that table:
- eBay vinyl: eBay's 15.3% Music rate excludes vinyl records, and records aren't listed as their own category, so the standard 13.6% applies.
- Amazon: the referral fee varies a lot by category. Amazon's table runs from 5% to 45%, so check yours. Media and Video Games rows list no minimum fee, while Toys & Games, Sports & Outdoors and "everything else" list $0.30.
- Whatnot commission differs by category and drops in tiers as your four-week sales grow. The 8% above is the US Sports Standard tier.
- † We couldn't open these pages directly today (they blocked our fetch), so we read these figures from search-result text of each company's own help page. They match what we used in our Discogs and sports card guides, but treat them as unconfirmed until you open the linked page.
What each fee is calculated on
The fee percentage matters less than what it's multiplied by.
| Platform | The fee is charged on |
|---|---|
| eBay | Item price, handling, buyer-paid shipping and sales tax |
| Mercari | Item price plus buyer-paid shipping. The fee page doesn't mention sales tax |
| Facebook Marketplace | Sale price, shipping fees and applicable taxes |
| Amazon | Total price: list price, shipping and gift-wrap charges. Tax isn't mentioned |
| Discogs † | Item price and shipping, per item |
| TCGplayer † | Commission on items and shipping. The 2.5% + $0.30 on the order total, including tax |
| Whatnot † | Commission on item price only. The 2.9% + $0.30 on the full order, including shipping and tax |
So shipping is in the fee base almost everywhere. Sales tax is in the base on eBay, on Facebook, and for the processing fees at TCGplayer and Whatnot. Here is what that does. Take a $100 item with $5 shipping and an assumed 8% sales tax ($8.40), so the buyer pays $113.40:
- eBay (13.6%): $15.42 + $0.40 = $15.82, versus $14.68 with no tax.
- Facebook Marketplace: $11.34, versus $10.50.
- Whatnot: commission stays at $8.00, but processing rises from $3.35 to $3.59.
Worked example: a $50 and a $100 sale
Every number below rests on these example inputs. They are assumptions, not platform rules:
- The item sells for $50 or $100.
- The buyer pays $5.00 shipping, and your postage costs $5.00. Shipping washes out, except that it sits in the fee base.
- No sales tax. Standard seller account, no promotions, no surcharges.
- Amazon: Individual plan, a 15% category. Whatnot: US Sports, Standard tier. TCGplayer: a Level 1-4 marketplace seller.
- Discogs: PayPal's published PayPal Checkout rate of 3.49% + $0.49. Your own PayPal rate may differ.
- Everything is rounded to the cent.
| Platform | $50 sale: fees | $50: left | $100 sale: fees | $100: left |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| eBay, most categories | $7.88 | $42.12 | $14.68 | $85.32 |
| eBay, trading cards and CCG | $7.69 | $42.31 | $14.31 | $85.69 |
| Mercari | $5.50 | $44.50 | $10.50 | $89.50 |
| Facebook (checkout order) | $5.50 | $44.50 | $10.50 | $89.50 |
| Amazon, Individual plan | $9.24 | $40.76 | $16.74 | $83.26 |
| Discogs † | $7.36 | $42.64 | $13.60 | $86.40 |
| TCGplayer † | $7.59 | $42.41 | $14.22 | $85.78 |
| Whatnot, Sports † | $5.90 | $44.10 | $11.35 | $88.65 |
"Left" is the sale price minus the platform's fees and nothing else. Subtract what you paid for the item, supplies, your time and taxes to see what's actually yours.
Here is how one row is built. eBay, most categories, $100 sale: 13.6% × ($100 + $5) = $14.28, plus the $0.40 per-order fee = $14.68. A record listed under Amazon's Media (Music) row would add the $1.80 closing fee, which makes the Amazon fees $11.04 on the $50 sale and $18.54 on the $100 sale.
Cheap items feel fees the most
Try a $20 item with $5 shipping. On eBay (13.6%), the fee is $3.40 + $0.40 = $3.80, which is 19% of the item price. On Mercari or Facebook, it's $2.50, or 12.5%. On Amazon's Individual plan in a 15% category, it's $3.75 + $0.99 = $4.74, or 23.7%. Flat fees (eBay's $0.40 per order, Amazon's $0.99 per item) take a bigger share of low-priced sales. Facebook's $0.80 minimum only bites when the order total is below $8.
Platform notes: what to watch
eBay. The fee is charged on tax too, and it drops to 2.35% only on the part of an item's sale above $7,500. Sellers rated Below Standard pay an additional 6% on final value fees (7% after four or more months in a row), so your seller rating is part of your fee.
Mercari. Prepaid shipping prices change on October 19, 2026. Mercari's table shows USPS Ground Advantage at 0.25 lb going from $4.91 (current rates, effective May 7, 2026) to $5.39, and at 1 lb from $7.48 to $7.99. If you charge buyers for shipping, the cost and the 10% on it both move, so re-run the math on heavier items like boxes and lots.
Facebook Marketplace. Meta's merchant terms set a 10% fee per transaction, with an $0.80 minimum, for individual sellers. The policy addresses only sales processed through Meta's checkout. It doesn't address non-checkout sales, cash or local pickup, and the page we read gives no effective date. That means we can't tell you what, if anything, Meta charges on a local meetup. Check Meta's current terms before you count on a fee-free sale.
Amazon. The two plans cost the same at about 40 items sold a month ($39.99 ÷ $0.99), before you weigh the Professional plan's bulk tools. Amazon gates some products behind approval. Its pricing page names certain cell phones, but we couldn't confirm from a current Amazon page whether collectibles or media categories need approval (unconfirmed). Check your exact category in Seller Central before you buy stock.
Discogs, TCGplayer and Whatnot. Discogs' PayPal processing comes out of the buyer's gross payment on top of the 9%. TCGplayer's commission went up in February 2026, and its commission cap rose from $50 to $75, so check the cap if you sell high-priced singles. Whatnot moved existing sellers to tiered commission on September 21, 2026.
Which platform fits vinyl, sports cards and Magic
Fees are one input. Where your buyers are matters as much.
- Vinyl: eBay (13.6%) or Discogs (9% plus processing †). Our Discogs vs eBay breakdown covers pre-orders, grading and pricing, and our vinyl resell group posts limited-pressing calls with where to sell each.
- Sports cards: eBay (13.25%) or Whatnot (8% commission plus processing †, if you're willing to sell live). See how to flip sports cards, or the sports card group.
- Magic: The Gathering: TCGplayer (10.75% plus 2.5% + $0.30 †) or eBay's collectible card games rate (13.25%). The MTG group posts the Secret Lair and set calls.
- Sealed, in-stock products: Amazon can work when a listing already exists, but you pay the plan fee and the 15% referral fee.
- Bulky lots and big boxes: Facebook Marketplace, with the local-sale caveat above.
New to all of this? Start with how to start reselling, and pick one category before you worry about the fee table.
Is the lowest fee the best place to resell?
Not by itself.
Worth a look: moving cheap items to a lower-fee platform. On a $20 sale, the gap between eBay and Mercari is $1.30, or 6.5% of the item price.
Not worth it: switching platforms to save two or three points if the item then sits unsold. On a $100 sale, eBay's fees are $4.18 above Mercari's. A 5% price drop on that item costs $5. Unsold inventory, returns and price drops can easily cost more than a fee gap, and none of them show up in the table.
Our read: check sold listings first, work out your net with the table above, and pick the platform where the item actually sells. The other half of the math is what you pay, which is why we keep a release and pre-order calendar of what's dropping and when.
Taxes: keep records
This is general information, not tax advice. The IRS's Form 1099-K page, checked 2026-10-02, says marketplaces and payment apps must report payments to the IRS when the total you receive for goods or services exceeds $20,000 across more than 200 transactions. The IRS also says that threshold doesn't decide whether money is taxable, and that income is reportable even if you never get a form.
Keep your receipts, fee statements and shipping costs, and talk to a tax professional about your situation.
