The Hot Wheels RLC Exclusive Datsun 240Z goes on sale on Mattel Creations on October 27, 2026 at 9:00 a.m. PT (12:00 p.m. ET) for $28.00. It is sold as "Standard OR Chase Variant (Randomized)": every order is a 1:64 Datsun 240Z, and some buyers will get the rare chrome Chase instead of the standard aqua car. Here is what Mattel's page says, what is still unknown and how to think about it.
What the RLC Datsun 240Z is
Per the Mattel Creations product page (SKU JPM47):
- Price: $28.00
- Who can buy: Red Line Club members only (Mattel's 1-year digital membership is $9.99)
- Limit: 2 per customer
- Standard car: Spectraflame aqua, ZAMAC body, bold #24 racing number on the doors, sponsor logos, metallic bronze-painted Real Riders wheels with TOYO TIRES sidewall detailing, matte black full-metal chassis, light smoke windows, black interior with aqua seats
- Chase car: premium pure chrome, the same graphics and wheels, black interior with red seats
- Packaging: illustrated blister card inside a protective Kar Keepers clamshell case
Mattel says the Chase cars "may replace the Standard version at random," that each is individually numbered and stickered, with a limited run of 5,000 pieces worldwide, and that receiving a Chase with your purchase is not guaranteed. The page gives no total production number for the standard car.
autoevolution, which covered the drop on October 24, counts this as the fourth Hot Wheels RLC Chase of 2026, after the Porsche 911 Turbo 3.3 Targa, the 1948 Chevrolet Fleetline and the '21 Ford Bronco. It credits the casting to Phil Riehlman, notes it first appeared in the 2006 First Edition series, and says it has no opening parts. Whether this is the last RLC Chase of the year is not confirmed by Mattel's page, so we are not calling it that.
Why this matters for resale
This is a randomized chase drop, which is the kind of product that gets attention from resellers. Three things drive it:
- The Chase is the prize. A numbered 5,000-piece chrome car is a different product from the aqua standard, and Mattel does not promise anyone one.
- Chase buyers are already paying up this year. autoevolution says buying the three earlier 2026 RLC Chases on eBay could cost up to $2,500 combined, and expects the 240Z to be more desirable than the Bronco, the cheapest of the three. That is the writer's estimate, not a sold-price record.
- Fast sellouts are the norm. autoevolution predicts this one sells out in under 60 seconds. We saw the same pattern with the RLC Nissan Skyline R32, which sold out quickly.
On eBay, presale listings for the 240Z were already up before the drop. Our releases page tracks recent eBay sales for it at an average of about $58 across 8 sales as of October 27. That is our tracker's figure, we have not re-verified each sale, and it likely includes presales on cars sellers did not have yet. Treat it as an early read on the standard car, not a settled price. We have no sold data for the Chase yet, and we are not going to guess one.
The case against
- You may not get the Chase. Mattel is explicit that it is random. Most buyers should plan on the standard car.
- The standard car is a $28 mainline-style casting. It reuses a casting that has had several runs. Unlike the R32, this is not a brand-new mold. Premiums over retail on the standard car are not guaranteed.
- Membership and shipping eat margin. The $9.99 membership is non-refundable per Mattel's FAQ, and shipping is extra.
- Pre-selling is against the rules. Mattel's RLC Membership Agreement bans pre-selling online exclusives before your card is charged and says it can end your membership without a refund. Read it before listing a presale, as we noted in the R32 breakdown.
- Orders can't be canceled. Mattel's FAQ says a submitted order cannot be changed or canceled. Returns are allowed within 30 days of receipt in original packaging per its return policy, but shipping and processing fees are not refunded.
Fee math
eBay's listed rate for most categories was 13.6% of the total sale plus $0.40 per order over $10 when we checked on September 29. On a hypothetical $58 order, eBay keeps about $8.29, leaving roughly $49.71 before your $28 cost, tax, shipping and packing materials. A standard car selling near $58 leaves a small margin per car. A Chase would be a different case, but without sold data, we can't tell you what.
Flip, hold or pass
This is analysis, not a promise.
- Flip: The standard car only if completed sales, not asking prices, are clearing well above $28 plus your costs once cars are in hand. If you pull a Chase, check numbered chrome sales for earlier 2026 RLC Chases first.
- Hold: A Chase you pulled. Scarcity is built in at 5,000 pieces, and these tend to get priced by feel in the first weeks.
- Pass: If you are not already an RLC member. Paying $9.99 to enter a lottery for a margin that may be thin is hard to justify purely as a flip.
