How to make money selling on eBay comes down to three things: buy something people want more than the supply, price it from what the exact item actually sold for, and keep your fees and shipping in the math. This guide uses one real purchase from this week to show how to sell things on eBay, step by step. The purchase is a limited vinyl record, so the category lessons are about vinyl, but the method works for cards, LEGO, games and more.
Everything about eBay's rules was checked on October 27, 2026. Results vary, prices move, and nothing here is a promise of profit.
The purchase: a limited vinyl at list price
This week our team bought Zach Bryan, Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs (12" EP) at its $50 list price. The first pressing is limited to 5,000 individually numbered copies and ships in December 2026. We covered it in our weekly roundup.
On October 26, 2026, the ten most recent completed eBay sales of the single LP averaged $435, with a range of $275 to $700. Most of those were presales, because the record hasn't shipped yet. That is a snapshot of what already happened, not a forecast.
Why does a limited vinyl behave this way? A fixed, numbered pressing plus an artist with a large audience means demand can outrun copies. Not every limited record does this. Plenty sell for about what they cost, and some for less, which is why the rest of this guide is about checking the numbers first.
Step 1: Find out what it actually sold for
The most common beginner mistake in selling things on eBay is pricing from asking prices. Anyone can list a record for $900. What matters is what buyers paid.
- Search the exact title on eBay, then filter to Sold items (and completed listings).
- Match the exact pressing: color, numbered or not, bundle or single record.
- Look at the ten most recent sales, not the best one. Note the range.
- Note whether the sales are presales or shipped copies, because those can price differently.
In our example, the $275 to $700 spread is wide. The honest reading is "somewhere in a range, and uncertain," not "$700." For a deeper walkthrough, see how we find products that resell.
Step 2: Know eBay's presale rule before you list an unreleased record
If you are selling something you've bought but haven't received, eBay treats it as a presale listing. eBay's help pages say presale listings must guarantee shipment within 40 business days of purchase and must clearly say "presale" in the title and description.
Our record ships in December, so the practical question is whether you can meet the shipping window you promise. If the pressing slips, you could miss the deadline and have to cancel the sale. That risk belongs in your math. We only describe what eBay's pages say here, so read the full presale policy in eBay's Help before listing.
Many sellers simply wait until the record arrives and then list it as a normal item. That removes the shipping-window risk but also means you take the price as it is on the day.
Step 3: Do the fee math before you buy
eBay's selling fees page lists a 13.6% final value fee for most categories (up to $7,500 per item), plus $0.40 per order on orders over $10. The fee applies to the sale's total amount, which includes the item price, shipping collected and sales tax. eBay's 15.3% Music rate says it excludes Vinyl Records, and the page doesn't give vinyl its own rate, so we assume the standard 13.6% here. That assumption is unconfirmed, so check the fee in your Seller Hub for the category. More detail is in our eBay seller fees guide.
Here is the worked example. Assumptions: you paid $50, the buyer pays $8 shipping, your label costs $8, supplies cost $2, and there is no sales tax.
| Final sale price | Sale total | eBay fee (13.6% + $0.40) | You keep before costs | After the $50 buy, $8 label and $2 supplies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $275 (low end) | $283 | $38.89 | $244.11 | $184.11 |
| $435 (average) | $443 | $60.65 | $382.35 | $322.35 |
| $700 (high end) | $708 | $96.69 | $611.31 | $551.31 |
| $60 (price falls) | $68 | $9.65 | $58.35 | -$1.65 |
The last row matters most. If the market falls to $60, a $50 record loses money after fees and shipping. A good result needs both a real gap and a price that holds up. These are illustrations of our own arithmetic, not eBay figures or typical outcomes.
Step 4: Create a listing that sells
How to sell things on eBay without wasting effort: make the listing match what buyers search for.
- Title: artist, full title, format, and the details that separate your copy: "numbered," "limited," color name, edition size.
- Photos: the front, the back, the numbering (if any) and the sealed or opened state. For sealed items, show the shrink wrap.
- Condition: say sealed, or describe any ring wear, seam splits or shelf wear plainly. A "not as described" return is costly, since you usually cover the return shipping.
- Item specifics: fill in artist, record label, format and release year. Buyers filter on these.
- Price format: a fixed price lets you hold for your number. An auction suits a rare record where you don't know the ceiling.
Step 5: Ship it so it arrives flat
Vinyl is easy to damage. Use a stiff record mailer, add cardboard stiffeners, keep the record from sliding, and buy tracked shipping. Tracking and proof of delivery protect you if a buyer says it didn't arrive. Pack as if it will be dropped, because it might be.
What can go wrong
- Price drops after release. Presale prices are often highest before copies ship and can settle once supply reaches buyers.
- Pressing delays or defects. Late shipments can break a presale window, and warped records get returned.
- Fees and shipping. The table shows how fast they eat a thin margin.
- Returns. Buyers can open a case if an item isn't as described.
- Taxes. Income from selling can be taxable. Ask a tax professional about your situation.
How this fits into a reselling routine
Selling on eBay isn't one lucky record. It's a habit: research the sold range, run the math, buy only where the gap survives the fees, and record what happened afterward. Our vinyl resell group page explains how our vinyl channel works, and our guide to making money reselling vinyl records and is vinyl worth reselling cover the category in more depth.
