How to Resell iPhones: Our Yearly Launch Playbook

· Updated · 5 min read · By the Friends & Family team

Every fall our team buys the new iPhone from Apple and resells it. In a normal year it sells for a steady $50 to $100 over retail for months, and Apple's return window is the safety net. This year's iPhone Duo pre-sales sold for about $1,000 over.

How do you resell iPhones? You buy the new model unlocked straight from Apple on launch day, then sell it to someone who would rather pay a bit more than wait for their own order to arrive. Our team has done this every year, and it's one of the steadier plays we run. This guide covers the steps, what a normal year pays, how the return policy limits your downside, and what the iPhone Duo is doing right now. For launch-day specifics on this year's phone, see our iPhone Duo pre-order guide.

How to resell iPhones in 5 steps

  1. Know the launch date. Apple announces pre-order and release dates ahead of time. Be ready before pre-orders open.
  2. Buy unlocked from Apple. Pick the unlocked option on Apple's Store page, not a carrier-locked version. Buyers paying a premium usually want a clean phone.
  3. Choose your model before launch day. Not every storage size sells at the same premium, so research what buyers are paying before you order.
  4. Sell it. Your options are a marketplace like eBay or a buyer who has already quoted you a price. Having a buyer lined up first is the lower-risk exit.
  5. Keep the return window in mind. If the premium disappears before you sell, Apple's return policy lets you send the phone back inside the window, as long as it's in the required condition (details below).

Can you make money reselling iPhones?

According to our team, new iPhones have usually carried a premium of about $50 to $100 over retail for several months after launch. That's a small margin per phone, not a home run, and we don't promise any particular result. It works because it repeats every year and doesn't depend on a one-day scramble.

Why the premium holds up:

  • Delivery dates slip. Our team's read from earlier launches is that new iPhones usually don't sell out outright. The shipping estimate keeps getting pushed back as more orders go in, so people who want one now will pay up.
  • Unlocked is what buyers want. A phone with no carrier lock is easier to sell.
  • Volume adds up. A modest margin on each phone is the point.

Is reselling iPhones risky?

It's low-risk, not no-risk. The reason is Apple's return policy. We read Apple's U.S. Sales and Refunds policy for this guide:

  • You can return or exchange a product within 14 days of the date you receive it from Apple, with a receipt.
  • The product must be in its original condition, with all included parts, accessories and packaging.
  • Returned products may require inspection, and an approved refund or exchange is issued within 10 business days.
  • If security features such as Activation Lock were turned on and can't be disabled by the person holding the phone, Apple may refuse the return.
  • To return ten or more of the same product, you have to return them to the Apple Store where you bought them.

So if prices drop before you sell, you aren't stuck holding the phone, provided you kept it in the condition Apple requires and acted inside the 14 days. Your money is still tied up until the refund lands, and a phone that's activated, damaged or missing its box may not qualify. Read Apple's sales policy yourself before you order.

Where to sell a new iPhone

  • eBay. Easy to list, but usually slower if you're moving several units. Check the sold results, not only the active listings, because asking prices are only wishes until someone pays.
  • A buyer who has already quoted you. Our team's advice is to line this up before launch day and not buy more than the buyer commits to.

This year: the iPhone Duo is a different story

Apple's Store page lists the iPhone Duo from $1,999 (256GB), with pre-orders shipping from October 23. On October 17, eBay's sold results for the 256GB Duo showed these sales, all marked "Sold Oct 17, 2026":

  • $3,300.00: Night Sky, listed as a pre-sale
  • $3,000.00: a listing built around an Apple Store pickup order
  • $2,999.99: Star White, listed as a pre-sale

Against Apple's $1,999 price, that's roughly $1,000 to $1,300 over retail. That's well beyond the usual $50 to $100. Two caveats: these are pre-sale listings, so buyers are paying for a spot in line before the phone ships, and two of the three were "or Best Offer" listings, so the final price paid may differ from the number shown. We're reading three sales from a single day, not an average.

We also looked at the active "iPhone Duo" listings. Those are only asking prices. For the 256GB, they ran from about $2,850 up past $4,500, and plenty won't sell at those numbers.

What to watch

  • Delivery dates. Apple's 14-day return window starts when the phone is delivered, not when you order, so a late phone means a late window.
  • Asking prices move. They can drop before a phone sells. Don't count a listing as profit until it's sold.
  • Capital is real. A 256GB Duo is $1,999 before tax, and bigger sizes cost more.
  • Scams. Buyers should be careful with pre-sale listings from brand-new accounts, and sellers should only list units they actually have an order for.
  • No promises. We can't guarantee what any phone sells for.

Reselling iPhones: common questions

Should I buy the iPhone unlocked? Yes. Our team buys unlocked from Apple because it's the version buyers want.

How much can you make reselling iPhones? Our team says a normal year has paid roughly $50 to $100 over retail for several months. On October 17, three 256GB Duo pre-sale listings sold on eBay for about $3,000 to $3,300, but results vary and aren't guaranteed.

Can you return an iPhone if it doesn't sell? Apple's policy allows returns within 14 days of receiving the phone if it's in original condition with all parts and packaging. Read the full policy first.

Do new iPhones sell out? Our team says they usually don't sell out outright. The delivery date tends to slip instead.
