LEGO Ideas Build, Paint and Play! (40889) is the next LEGO gift with purchase, and it goes live October 28. Spend $130 on LEGO.com or in a LEGO Store and it's free, while stocks last. It was officially announced on October 23, and The Brick Fan (@tormentalous) flagged it on X.
We don't have sold data yet, because the set doesn't exist at retail. But it checks several boxes that tend to matter for GWP resale.
What LEGO announced
- Set: LEGO Ideas Build, Paint and Play! (40889)
- Pieces: 158, rated 18+ (per the box shown by The Brick Fan)
- Free with: a $130 order in the US (£115 / €130 / CA$170 / AU$210 / S$190)
- Starts: October 28, 2026
- Ends: no fixed date, while stocks last. Third-party listings guess at early-to-mid November, but that's unconfirmed.
- Where: LEGO.com and LEGO Stores
What's in the box
It's a model-builder's workbench in miniature: paint tubes, brushes, a sprue of grey parts, a pair of nippers, and a teal Classic Space astronaut you "paint" with the included stickers and paints. It comes from fan designer Doomslizer, whose entry won the 2025 LEGO Ideas Build Your Hobby challenge.
The detail collectors care about: it introduces a Light Bluish Gray Classic Space helmet and air tanks, which are new recolours. Classic Space fans have asked for a grey astronaut for years, and this is the first official way to build one.
Why this GWP could sell out
It's limited, and the end date is unknown. "While stocks last" means it can vanish before anyone expects it. GWP sets don't return to the catalog afterwards.
New elements. Recoloured parts give builders and minifigure collectors a reason to buy one even if they don't care about the set.
A passionate niche. Classic Space is one of LEGO's best-loved themes, and fan-designed Ideas sets get attention.
It's a pattern. Earlier this month we covered the LEGO Astro Bot GWP and how free LEGO gifts and retiring sets create arbitrage. The Kanto Region Badge Collection from LEGO's first Pokémon launch is the example we keep pointing to. Not every GWP does that well, though. Plenty settle near zero.
Flip, hold or pass? Our take
Free with an order you were making anyway: take it. If $130 of LEGO is already in your cart, the set is free. That's the cleanest way to play it, with no cash at risk.
Don't pad a cart just for it. Spending $130 to chase a free set only makes sense if you'd buy the rest at a fair price. A GWP that resells for $20 to $30 doesn't justify unwanted LEGO.
Hold sealed, and wait for sold prices. We have no resale numbers yet. Don't trust listed prices in week one. Watch what actually sells on eBay's sold listings in November, then decide.
Keep the box crisp, ship carefully, and remember shipping and fees come out of a small-ticket flip. Our guide to how to invest in LEGO sets covers the longer-term side.
Also in LEGO news: Daft Punk is coming
LEGO and Daft Punk confirmed a LEGO Ideas set on October 22 after a teaser the day before. It's based on the fan project Daft Punk Concert by RobotRock, which depicts the duo's pyramid stage. LEGO says more comes in 2027. There's no price, piece count or release date yet, so there's nothing to buy now. But expect it to draw heavy demand when it lands.
What to watch next
- October 28. Check your cart shows the GWP before you pay, since some products don't count toward the threshold.
- Stock status. If the free gift disappears from LEGO.com early, aftermarket interest picks up.
- eBay sold listings. Track completed sales, not asking prices.
