2026 Topps Allen & Ginter Hobby Box: Worth $159.99?

· 6 min read · By the Friends & Family team

2026 Allen & Ginter has been selling for about $205 a box on eBay presales, and Topps is charging $159.99. That gap looks like a flip, until you take out eBay's cut. Here's what's in the box, what it actually sells for and how we'd play release day.

2026 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball releases on topps.com on October 7 at 1pm ET. The Hobby Box costs $159.99 for 18 packs of 8 cards with 2 autograph, relic, printing plate or Rip Cards per box. Short version: presales are holding around $205, which is good value at retail but a thin flip after fees. This looks more like a box to open or hold than one to flip on day one.

What's in a 2026 Topps Allen & Ginter Hobby Box

From the topps.com listing and the official product page:

  • Price: $159.99 per Hobby Box on topps.com
  • Contents: 18 packs per box, 8 cards per pack (144 cards)
  • Hits: 2 autograph, relic, printing plate or Rip Cards per box
  • Release date: October 7, 2026, at 1pm ET on topps.com (hobby boxes also went up for pre-order on September 8)
  • Other formats: a $24.99 Value Box of 8 packs, and 12-box hobby cases
  • The set: a 300-card base set of baseball stars mixed with athletes, entertainers and oddball subjects from outside the game, plus Chrome, Metal and Stained Glass mini variations

What collectors will be chasing:

  • The rookie class: Jac Caglianone, Samuel Basallo, Colson Montgomery, Roman Anthony and Christian Moore are on the base checklist, alongside stars like Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani.
  • Non-baseball subjects: this year's checklist includes Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Luke Combs and hockey prospect Gavin McKenna, and Topps lists Mini Non-Baseball Autographs as a key chase.
  • Autographs: Signature Minis return with rare Chrome and Metal parallels, plus on-card Autograph Relic cards with jumbo jersey pieces.
  • The rarest hits: one-of-one Cut Signatures and limited-edition Rip Cards.
  • New inserts: Mini Musical Methods, Mini 50 Ways to Say Hello and Wicked Power.

Topps has published the checklist and odds sheet for this one. Note that our Discord write-up listed 24 packs per box. The topps.com listing says 18, so that's the number we're using.

Why collectors are paying attention

Allen & Ginter is one of the hobby's most recognizable sets: vintage tobacco-card design, full-size and mini cards, and a checklist that puts movie stars and musicians next to MLB rookies. It also has a steady secondary market. Last year's 2025 hobby box still sells for well over $200 on eBay.

ML, who runs sports cards in our Discord, flagged the bigger story the night before the drop: he expects about one autograph per box this year, up from last year, when he says an auto came slightly more often than every other box. That's his read, not an official pull rate. Topps only promises 2 autograph, relic, plate or Rip Cards per box. If he's right, 2026 is a better box than 2025 at a lower market price, with what he calls a great rookie class.

The catch is supply. ML estimates the hobby print run is up slightly from last year, around 10,500 cases. Topps hasn't confirmed a number, but either way there are a lot of these boxes, and that matters for the first few weeks.

Retail vs. eBay: what it's selling for

Retail is $159.99 per Hobby Box. Here's what eBay showed on the morning of October 7:

  • 2026 Hobby Box: 55 sales from September 8 to October 7 ran $180 to $288, with the middle sale around $205. The 17 sales from October 5 to 7 were tighter, $199 to $240, with most around $200 to $210. Nearly all of them were presales, and shipping was free or about $6 to $11.
  • 2026 Hobby Case (12 boxes): only one clear sale so far, at $2,350 on October 5. Retail for 12 boxes is $1,919.88.
  • 2025 Hobby Box, for comparison: 42 sales from late July to October 3 mostly ran $215 to $250, with the middle sale around $220.

Here's the math. eBay takes 13.25% plus $0.40 on a trading card sale, and the fee is charged on the sale price plus shipping and sales tax. Your cost is $159.99 plus tax (about $171 at 7%).

  • At the typical $205 presale, plus about $7 shipping: roughly $28.50 in fees leaves about $183, or around $12 per box over your cost, before you pay to ship it.
  • At $200 with free shipping: about $27 in fees leaves about $173. That's break-even, and shipping comes out of your pocket.
  • If it slips to the $180 low: about $24 in fees leaves about $156, a loss of around $15 per box before shipping.

Cases are no better on eBay. At $2,350, fees of about $312 leave roughly $2,038, against a cost of about $2,054 with tax. Fees on the tax portion and the cost of shipping a case come on top of that.

Buyers in our WTB channel are already asking for sealed cases, and sellers in our WTS channel have been offering loose boxes and cases ahead of release day, so there's plenty of supply out there.

Flip, hold or pass? Our take

ML's call: good value at retail, careful on day one. He expects some prices to slip because there are a lot of these boxes, but he doesn't think they have far to fall from around $200. Here's how we'd think about it:

  1. Don't buy it for a fast flip. At $159.99 and a $200 to $210 market, eBay fees eat almost the whole spread. Selling to another collector directly, without the 13.25% cut, is the only way a quick flip really works.
  2. It's a good box to open or hold. ML's view is that the market hasn't caught on yet that this year's box should be stronger than 2025's, which still sells for $200+, and he thinks 2026 should age very well.
  3. Be careful with singles right away. ML specifically warned about singles on release day. With this much product being opened, the early single prices are the ones most likely to drop. If you rip, be ready to hold the hits or sell near retail.

What to watch

  • The first week after release. Presales have held around $200 to $210. If boxes stay there once everyone's orders ship, the floor is real.
  • Early box breaks. Whether hobby boxes really deliver about one auto per box will show up fast on breaks and social media, and that's what could separate 2026 from 2025 on price.
  • Rookie singles. Caglianone, Basallo, Montgomery, Anthony and Moore will set the tone for what boxes are worth long term.
  • Case prices. At around $2,350 there's no eBay margin on a case. A move up in case sales is the first sign the market is catching on.

Every Topps drop gets a full breakdown in our sports card channel before it goes live: pricing, what's worth buying, what to skip, and the details you need on drop day. For Allen & Ginter, members had ML's take on the presale market, the print run and the auto rate the night before release.

And when it's time to sell, you don't have to rely on eBay. Our WTB and WTS channels are where big sellers, breakers and collectors in the community buy and sell with each other every day, and that's often the fastest way to move sealed boxes and cases without giving up 13.25% in fees.
