2026 Topps Inception Football FDI: Worth $900?

· 6 min read · By the Friends & Family team

Topps opened the 2026 Inception Football First Day Issue auction at $2,000 a box and kept cutting the price until it sold out at $900. Every box has a patch auto numbered to 22 that you can't get anywhere else. Here's whether that price leaves room to flip.

2026 Topps Inception Football got its First Day Issue (FDI) box on October 1: a topps.com-only version of the hobby box with extra numbered cards, sold through a Dutch auction. The price started at $2,000 and dropped over time until the boxes sold out at $900. The short answer: if you got in near the bottom, the comparable FDI releases suggest room for a profit. But there are no eBay sales yet, and FDI boxes can get harder to sell once regular hobby boxes arrive.

What's in a 2026 Topps Inception Football First Day Issue box

From Topps' product page:

  • Format: 1 pack per box, 7 cards per pack
  • Hits: 1 autograph, plus 1 FDI-exclusive Patch Auto numbered /22
  • Parallels: 2 parallels, plus 2 FDI-exclusive parallels numbered /18
  • Ship date: Topps lists the release date as October 30, 2026. Pre-orders are set to ship ahead of it, but Topps doesn't guarantee delivery by that date.
  • Where: topps.com only. The FDI is a separate product from the regular hobby box.

How the auction worked: the price starts high and drops at set intervals. You buy at whatever the price is when you click, and every buyer pays the price they locked in. There's no final clearing price. Boxes bought at $1,500 stayed at $1,500 even though the last ones sold for $900.

The regular hobby box goes up for pre-order on topps.com on October 5 at 1pm ET. Topps hasn't announced its price yet.

Why collectors are paying attention

Inception is one of Topps' premium, autograph-heavy brands. This year's football set has a 200-card base set and is led by Fernando Mendoza, along with rookies like Ty Simpson, Carson Beck, Jeremiyah Love, Carnell Tate and Makai Lemon. The chase cards include:

  • Rookie Jumbo Relic Autographs with large patch pieces
  • Dual Rookie Autographs, pairing two rookies from the same team
  • Inception Silver Signings, with rare 1/1 inscription versions
  • New Immersion Autographs and Charged Particles autograph sets
  • New Gold Electricity and Hot Pink parallels, plus returning Dawn of Greatness and Genesis

Timing helps too. It's early in the 2026 football card season, and ML has been saying for weeks that the football market needs new product to open.

Retail vs. eBay: what it's selling for

Topps' price ended at $900 a box when the auction sold out (the auction opened at $2,000). Here's the eBay picture as of October 2:

  • Inception Football FDI sales: none yet. The auction ended yesterday. Active presale listings for single boxes start at about $1,700, and most ask $1,900 to $2,300. Those are asking prices, not sales.
  • The closest comparable, 2026 Bowman Football FDI: Topps' auction for it opened at $1,500 on September 4 and sold out at $700. Since then, 13 single FDI boxes have sold on eBay for $589 to $1,399. Most landed between $1,050 and $1,200, and the middle sale was about $1,100, roughly 1.6x the sold-out price. The early sales were presales; later ones were boxes in hand. Several were Best Offer listings, which can close below the listed price.
  • Last season's 2025-26 Inception Basketball FDI: seven boxes have sold on eBay since July, for $1,444 to $2,100.

The math. eBay takes 13.25% plus $0.40 on a trading card sale, and the fee is charged on the sale price plus shipping and sales tax. Just to get your $900 back after fees, a box needs to sell for about $1,040, before you count the sales tax you paid or shipping. If Inception follows Bowman's pattern (about 1.6x the sold-out price), that's roughly $1,415. Fees take about $188 of that, leaving around $1,225 against $900 plus tax. Insured shipping on a box this expensive comes on top. That's an illustration, not a forecast: Inception doesn't have a single sale yet.

If you paid more than $900 during the auction, the margin shrinks quickly. At $1,200 or more, you're counting on prices well above what Bowman FDI has sold for.

Flip, hold or pass? Our take

ML runs sports cards in our Discord. Going in, ML's take was that buying under $1,000 was reasonable. The auction ended at $900, close to ML's expectations, and ML didn't expect it to go much below Bowman's $700. Here's the reasoning:

  1. FDI boxes usually sell for a premium. ML's read is that recent FDI boxes have sold for about 1.5x to 2x the regular hobby box. ML expects regular Inception hobby to sell for around $400 to $500 on the secondary market. That's an estimate, since Topps hasn't priced it yet.
  2. The print run looks small. Two parallels numbered /18 across a 200-card base set work out to about 1,800 boxes. ML thinks that's probably the most there are. Topps hasn't published the print run, so treat that as an estimate.
  3. Don't hold too long. Bowman Football FDI sold for as much as $1,100 early. ML pointed out that once regular Bowman hobby hit release day, hobby prices started falling, and you wouldn't want to be stuck holding FDI boxes then. ML thinks regular Inception hobby can hold its price better, but the advice is the same: if you don't have a buyer lined up, things can get tricky.

Our read: at $900, this is a decent buy with a plan to sell. That means selling the presale early or having a buyer ready. It's not a box to sit on until release day and hope.

What to watch

  • First eBay sales. The first few FDI sales will show whether the $1,900+ asking prices hold up or fall toward Bowman's ~$1,100 range.
  • Regular hobby pricing on October 5. If Topps prices hobby high, the FDI premium looks smaller. If it's cheap, FDI boxes look expensive next to it.
  • Odds and print run. Topps hasn't published odds or box counts yet. A confirmed print run would settle the scarcity question.
  • Early Mendoza pulls. A big Mendoza patch auto from an early box moves prices for the whole product.
