The Hot Wheels x MoMA VW Beetle Type 1 Sedan (SKU JGV38) is a 1:64 die-cast replica of the 1959 Beetle in the Museum of Modern Art's collection. Mattel Creations lists it at $45.00 with a limit of 2 per customer. Mattel has not published a production number, so there is no official figure for how rare it is.

Hot Wheels x MoMA VW Beetle price: how much is it?

  • Mattel Creations: $45.00, limit 2 per customer. The page showed "In stock" when we checked on October 29, 2026.
  • MoMA Design Store: $45 for non-members and $40.50 for members, per its product page. When we checked the search listing it was marked as not currently available.
  • Our releases page: records a Mattel Creations pre-order that ships November 6, 2026. See /releases.

Beware of unfamiliar sites showing the car at $13 or "sold out." Those are not Mattel or MoMA pages.

What you get

  • Mignonette green ZAMAC body with a light olive green interior
  • Opening rear hood showing a detailed engine replica
  • Custom Real Riders wheels with whitewalls
  • An acrylic display case inspired by the car on display in a MoMA gallery, with a slide-out drawer holding a booklet, plus a slipcover and an outer box

All of that comes from Mattel's product page. It is one of four cars in the collaboration; the others are the Citroën DS 23, the Jaguar E-Type Roadster and the 1965 Porsche 911 Coupe, all $45.

Hot Wheels MoMA Beetle eBay sold price

Our releases page records an eBay sold average of $49 across 10 sales as of October 26, 2026, against the $45 retail price. That is our team's check of completed sales. We tried to re-check eBay on October 29 and could not load the sold listings, so treat $49 as a snapshot of a small sample.

Why this matters for resale

  • Museum license. MoMA branding and a display case make this a gift and design-collector item, not just a Hot Wheels pickup.
  • Beetle appeal. Mattel notes the Type 1 became the best-selling automobile of all time in 1972.
  • Limit of two. The per-customer cap suggests Mattel expects demand, but it is not a supply number.
  • Series completers. Buyers who want all four cars may pay for a missing one.

Risks and the case against

  • Thin margin. About $4 over retail before fees and shipping is a loss for most sellers. See our reseller fees guide.
  • Unknown supply. If Mattel restocks, the premium disappears. The page showed in stock when we looked.
  • Packaging risk. The acrylic case and outer box add bulk and damage risk in shipping.
  • Small sample. Ten sales do not make a market.

Flip, hold or pass

This is analysis, not a promise.

  • Flip: Only if you hold a unit at $45 or less and sold prices move clearly above retail after fees.
  • Hold: If you collect Hot Wheels, Volkswagen or design-museum pieces. Keep the box sealed.
  • Pass: If you would have to pay above $45 to get one.
