How to make money selling on eBay comes down to three things: buy something collectors want more than the supply, price it from what the exact item actually sold for, and keep fees and shipping in the math. This guide uses one real purchase from this week to show how to sell things on eBay, step by step. The product is a sealed trading card box, so the category lessons are about cards, but the same method works for vinyl, LEGO, games and more. (We did the same walkthrough for a record in how to make money selling vinyl on eBay.)
Everything below was checked on October 28, 2026. Results vary, prices move, and nothing here is a promise of profit.
The purchase: a $75 sealed box
Our weekly roundup recorded the 2026 Topps Garbage Pail Kids Halloween hobby box at its $75 retail price (Topps lists $75.00; the roundup used $74.99), bought in an online drop on October 22. Each box holds 3 packs of 8 cards. Our sports card lead ML estimated only about 6,000 boxes were made, which is his number and not one Topps has published. See the full box breakdown and our weekly roundup.
On October 28, 2026, the ten most recent completed eBay sales of a single box (we skipped the 5-box lots) ranged from $130 to $159 and averaged $139. These are the prices shown on the listings, and a few were "or Best Offer" listings, so the final price paid may have been a bit lower. A week earlier, on October 22, the first presales were closing between $119 and $133. All of those listings were marked presale, so nobody had a box in hand yet.
Why do sealed trading card boxes behave like this? A small, one-time print run, a nostalgic brand and a few big chases per box (artist autographs and sketch cards, in this case) mean demand can outrun supply on release week. Plenty of boxes don't do this, and some sell for less than retail, which is why the rest of this guide is about checking the numbers first.
Step 1: Find out what it actually sold for
The most common beginner mistake in selling things on eBay is pricing from asking prices. Anyone can list a box for $300. What matters is what buyers paid.
- Search the exact product name on eBay, then filter to Sold items (completed listings).
- Match the exact product: the same year, set and format. A hobby box and a retail blaster are different items.
- Exclude lots and cases, which skew the average. A "5x" listing is not the price of one box.
- Look at the ten most recent sales, not the best one, and note the range. In our example, $130 to $159 is a fairly tight range, which is a better sign than one lucky $300 sale.
- Note whether the sales are presales or shipped boxes, because the two can price differently.

Step 2: Understand the presale catch
Most of the sales above were presales: sellers listed a box they had bought but not yet received. eBay's help pages say presale listings must guarantee shipment within 40 business days of purchase and must say "presale" clearly in the title and description. Several of the listings we saw said they would ship by October 27.
If your box slips, you could miss the window you promised and have to cancel the sale. That risk belongs in your math. Read eBay's full presale policy before listing something you don't yet hold. Many sellers instead wait until the box arrives and list it as a normal item, which removes the shipping-window risk but means you take the market price on the day.
Step 3: Do the fee math before you buy
eBay's fee depends on the category. Our earlier GPK breakdown used 13.25% plus $0.40 per order for trading cards, and the fee applies to the sale total including shipping and sales tax. Rates change, so confirm yours in Seller Hub, and see our eBay seller fees guide for the general formula.
Worked example. Assumptions: you paid $75, the buyer pays $8 shipping, your label costs $6, supplies cost $2, and there is no sales tax.
| Final sale price | Sale total | eBay fee (13.25% + $0.40) | You keep before costs | After the $75 buy, $6 label and $2 supplies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $119 (low presale) | $127 | $17.23 | $109.77 | $26.77 |
| $139 (recent average) | $147 | $19.88 | $127.12 | $44.12 |
| $159 (high end) | $167 | $22.53 | $144.47 | $61.47 |
| $90 (price falls) | $98 | $13.39 | $84.61 | $1.61 |
The last row is the lesson. If the market settles near $90 once boxes ship, a $75 box barely breaks even after fees and shipping. A good result needs both a real gap and a price that holds. These are illustrations of our own arithmetic, not eBay figures or typical outcomes.
Step 4: Create a listing that sells
- Title: year, brand, set, format and condition: "2026 Topps Garbage Pail Kids Halloween Hobby Box Factory Sealed." Add "presale" if you haven't received it.
- Photos: the front, the back and the sides, showing the factory seal and the box corners.
- Condition: say sealed, and describe any crushed corners or shelf wear plainly. A "not as described" return costs you the shipping both ways.
- Item specifics: fill in the set, year, manufacturer and format. Buyers filter on these.
- Price format: fixed price with Best Offer lets you hold for your number. An auction suits a box where you don't know the ceiling.
Step 5: Ship it so it arrives sealed
Sealed boxes lose value fast if a corner gets crushed. Use a box with room for padding, wrap the product, fill the voids so it can't slide, and buy tracked shipping. Tracking and proof of delivery protect you if a buyer says it didn't arrive.
What can go wrong
- Price drops after release. Presale prices are often the high point and can settle once supply reaches buyers.
- Reprints and supply. A box that looked limited can turn out to be easier to find than expected.
- Fees and shipping. The table shows how fast they eat a thin margin.
- Returns. Buyers can open a case if an item isn't as described.
- Taxes. Income from selling can be taxable. Ask a tax professional about your situation.
How this fits into a reselling routine
Selling on eBay isn't one lucky box. It's a habit: research the sold range, run the math, buy only where the gap survives the fees, and record what happened afterward.
