Japan Restricts Pokémon Resale: What It Means

· 4 min read · By the Friends & Family team

Japan's biggest resale marketplaces are now limiting how Pokémon cards can be flipped, and the 30th Celebration set is the first target. Nothing has changed in the US yet, but the pattern matters if you buy sealed.

Starting October 13, Yahoo! Auctions and Yahoo! Flea Market in Japan prohibit several kinds of Pokémon TCG listings, according to Dexerto's report on the announcement from LINE Yahoo. The rules were developed with The Pokémon Company, and they start with the 30th Celebration set.

This is a Japanese marketplace policy, not a US one. But it is the third marketplace move tied to 30th Celebration this year, and it shows where the hobby's rules are heading.

What Yahoo is restricting

Per Dexerto, the new rules prohibit:

  • Listing cards by the carton, meaning several booster boxes still in wholesale packaging
  • Empty booster boxes and empty packs
  • Large quantities of the same product listed shortly after a release, starting with 30th Celebration

Dexerto says the changes are not a blanket ban on resale. Individual cards and other products can still be sold if they follow the platform's rules. The article doesn't say how long the post-release limit lasts, and we couldn't read LINE Yahoo's original announcement, so treat the exact wording as unconfirmed.

Dexerto also reports that The Pokémon Company and LINE Yahoo signed a memorandum of understanding in July 2023. Under it, The Pokémon Company shares information on new releases and reports listings that infringe its rights, and LINE Yahoo warns users and removes violating listings.

The pattern: three marketplaces, one set

30th Celebration has now triggered action on several resale sites:

  • eBay (US), August 2026: Wargamer reported that eBay flagged and pulled pre-release 30th Celebration cards. The notice said the sale of stolen property isn't allowed, after The Pokémon Company International told eBay the cards weren't available for public sale through authorized channels yet.
  • Mercari (Japan), September 2026: Dexerto says Mercari placed temporary restrictions on sealed 30th Celebration products.
  • Yahoo! Auctions and Flea Market (Japan), October 13: the carton and bulk-listing limits above.

The US rules aren't the same. Dexerto notes that no comparable measures exist outside Japan, and it names eBay as a place where retail TCG products are regularly relisted above retail price. eBay's rule in August was about pre-release listings, not bulk sealed product.

Why US resellers should care

1. Don't plan around Japanese supply. If you were considering buying Japanese sealed product to resell, the Yahoo and Mercari limits make bulk listing there harder. We haven't verified any effect on prices, and nobody should assume one.

2. Rules tend to follow big sets. The Pokémon Company has now shared release information with marketplaces and asked them to act on 30th Celebration. If a US marketplace tightened its rules the same way, it could affect anyone listing multiple sealed units at once. That's a possibility, not a report: we found nothing saying it's planned.

3. Sourcing channels matter more. The eBay episode in August was about where cards came from before launch. Buying from retailers like Target and Walmart, and keeping your receipts, is the safe path. Our guide to buying Pokémon cards at retail covers how that works.

Fee math if you do sell on eBay

eBay's fee page lists Collectible Card Games at 13.25% of the total sale up to $7,500 per item, plus $0.40 per order over $10. On a $100 sealed product that's about $13.65 before shipping and supplies. Our reseller fees breakdown compares platforms, and our Mercari shipping guide covers that site.

Flip, hold or pass?

This is analysis, not a promise.

  • Flip: nothing in this news stops a normal US flip. Selling a few sealed items you bought at retail is unaffected.
  • Hold: if marketplace limits reduce Japanese bulk supply, that could matter for 30th Celebration over time, but there's no evidence yet. Check recent 30th Celebration card prices before deciding.
  • Pass: on any plan that depends on listing large quantities of one new product right after release. That's exactly what Yahoo just limited in Japan.
