Magic The Hobbit Booster Box Price & Resale Value

· 6 min read · By the Friends & Family team

Searches for the Magic: The Gathering The Hobbit booster box rose in the past week. Here is what Collector and Play Booster boxes actually sold for on eBay this week, what Wizards published as MSRP, and why one gold Smaug card is the whole story.

Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit released on August 14, 2026, and people are searching for the Hobbit booster box price again. On November 5, 2026, eBay sold listings for a sealed Collector Booster box (12 packs) were mostly about $560 to $615 in the US, and the Play Booster box (30 packs) sold for about $125 to $150. Wizards published per-pack MSRPs of $37.99 (Collector) and $6.99 (Play). The chase is the gleaming gold Smaug the Magnificent headliner, with approximately 500 printed, and it only comes in Collector Boosters.

This page answers the questions behind the searches: how much is a Hobbit booster box, what do the boxes sell for on eBay, how rare is the gold Smaug, and is a box worth buying now. If you want the same math for other sets, see our Star Trek box and bundle breakdown and the Final Fantasy booster box price guide.

How much is a Hobbit booster box?

Wizards' collecting guide lists these official MSRPs:

Product Official MSRP
Play Booster $6.99
Collector Booster $37.99
Bundle $69.99
Gift Bundle $89.99
Draft Night $119.99
Scene Box $41.99

Wizards publishes per-pack prices and does not list a box price in that guide, so we are not stating a box MSRP. Multiplying out gives a reference point: 12 Collector Boosters x $37.99 = $455.88, and 30 Play Boosters x $6.99 = $209.70. Those are our math, not a Wizards price, and retailers set box prices themselves. Check the retailer's listing before you pay.

Magic The Hobbit booster box eBay sold prices

We checked eBay sold listings on November 5, 2026 ("The Hobbit Magic The Gathering booster box," sealed, US sellers unless noted). On best-offer sales, eBay shows the listed price, which can differ from the final accepted offer.

Scene Box (Treasures of Smaug) $49 Best offer accepted, Nov 4 to 5.

International sellers asked more (UK Collector boxes about $674 to $704, plus delivery and import fees), so check where the seller is before you compare.

Two comparisons worth knowing:

  • Collector box: a $590 sale is about $134 over our 12 x $37.99 reference of $455.88.
  • Play box: $125 to $150 is well under 30 loose packs at $6.99. Boxes are not priced as the sum of single packs.

How rare is the gold Smaug?

Wizards says there will be approximately 500 gleaming gold Smaug the Magnificent headliner cards printed. It appears only in Collector Boosters (of any language, but the card is always English) and is mechanically identical to its other versions. Wizards does not publish pull odds.

Graded copies have sold for very large amounts on eBay. In October 2026 we saw a PSA 10 listing end with an accepted best offer (listed at $53,499.69), a CGC Pristine 10 listing at $50,000 and BGS 9.5 copies listed at $28,000 to $29,499.99. For best-offer sales the final price is not shown, so treat those as listed prices. One copy of a card with a print run near 500 is not a price for the set or a box. It is the reason Collector boxes cost what they do.

Hobbit chase cards

Wizards names these as the collecting highlights:

  • Gleaming gold Smaug the Magnificent, about 500 copies, Collector Boosters only.
  • 40 Middle-earth classic artist cards (mythic, borderless, reprinted from Tales of Middle-earth). Every Play Booster box and Collector Booster box includes a Box Topper with one traditional foil classic artist card.
  • 5 Dwarvish language cards, Collector Boosters only.
  • Book cover cards and Dragon hoard frame cards, with surge foil versions only in Collector Boosters.

We did not price singles beyond the Smaug sales above, so check sold listings for any card you plan to buy or sell.

Hobbit release date and key dates

Per Wizards, the Global Tabletop release was August 14, 2026, with prerelease events August 7 to 13 and MTG Arena launching August 11. The Gift Bundle came later, on September 4, 2026. Commander Party rounds ran August 21 to 27 and September 18 to 24.

Fee math: what a box nets on eBay

eBay's Collectible Card Games rate is 13.25% of the sale up to $7,500, per eBay's fee page (checked today), plus eBay's per-order fee.

  • Collector box sold at $590: fees about $78.18, leaving about $511.82 before shipping and packaging.
  • Play box sold at $130: fees about $17.23, leaving about $112.77 before shipping.

To profit, your cost has to be well under those nets. If you buy a Collector box at today's sold prices and resell at the same price, you lose about 13% to fees.

Flip, hold or pass?

This is analysis, not a promise.

  • Collector box: hold only if you are a collector. A box near $575 to $615 already prices in the gold Smaug chase. At those prices a flip needs a clear premium over the fee-adjusted cost, and we saw one $709.95 sale on Oct 23 against $560 to $615 this week, so prices move both ways.
  • Play box: pass for flipping. At $125 to $150 the fees alone eat most of any spread, and the Box Topper is the only chase item inside.
  • Gift Bundle and Draft Night: small margins. Sold prices sit near or just above the official MSRPs, so there is little room after fees.
  • Pass on any listing far above these ranges, and on imports where delivery and import fees double the cost.

Retailer terms

Wizards states no retailer cancellation or return policy, and we did not verify any retailer's policy for these products. Confirm returns and shipping terms on the specific listing before you pay. Sealed boxes should arrive factory sealed, and photos of the shrink wrap matter.
