Warhammer 40K Commander Decks Reprint: Sell or Hold?

· 5 min read · By the Friends & Family team

The four Warhammer 40,000 Commander decks launched at $59.99 in 2022 and now sell sealed for $250 to $340 on eBay. Wizards just confirmed a small reprint. If you're sitting on one, here's how to think about it.

The most expensive Commander precons in Magic are getting more copies. Wizards of the Coast confirmed this week that the 2022 Warhammer 40,000 Commander decks are being reprinted in a "small" run for distributors and stores. There's no price, no release date and no word on how many copies. That uncertainty is exactly what makes this one worth thinking through before you list or buy anything.

What Wizards confirmed

After reports that game stores were being offered new stock of the out-of-print decks, Wizards told IGN it is doing a small reprint of the Commander decks that will soon be available to distributors and stores. We couldn't open the IGN piece directly, so this comes from MTG Rocks and TheGamer, which both quote the same statement. Wizards also said retailers should check with their distributors, because availability may vary by region.

Magic creator Joel Are Magic flagged the news on X on Oct 8. We treat that as a pointer only; the facts here come from the Wizards statement as quoted by the outlets.

What is not confirmed:

  • Price. Nobody has announced one. The originals were $59.99 each.
  • Release date. TheGamer guesses early 2027 at the earliest. That is its inference, not Wizards' word.
  • Print run size. Wizards only said "small."
  • Which decks. Early reports said only three of the four could be ordered. Wizards' statement doesn't address it.
  • Collector's Editions. The statement doesn't mention them.

The four decks

These were the first Universes Beyond preconstructed Commander decks, released in 2022. Each is a 100-card deck with a Collector's Edition version that used the Surge Foil process.

  • Forces of the Imperium (white-blue-black), led by Inquisitor Greyfax and Marneus Calgar
  • Necron Dynasties (mono-black), led by Szarekh, the Silent King and Imotekh the Stormlord
  • Tyranid Swarm (green-blue-red), led by The Swarmlord and Magus Lucca Kane
  • The Ruinous Powers (blue-black-red), led by Abaddon the Despoiler and Be'lakor, the Dark Master

What they sell for right now

On Oct 9 I checked eBay sold listings for sealed copies. This is a snapshot, not an average:

  • Necron Dynasties: a sealed copy sold for $250 on Oct 8, others at $335 and $339.99 (plus shipping) on Oct 6. A pre-owned copy with a deck box sold for $284.99 on Oct 9.
  • Tyranid Swarm: sealed copies sold between $286 and $305 from Oct 1 to Oct 6, several by accepted offer.
  • Collector's Edition: one listing sold at $675 on Oct 8. One sale is not a market, so treat it as a ceiling, not a price.

MTG Rocks lists secondary prices of roughly $230 for The Ruinous Powers, $294 for Tyranid Swarm, $312 for Forces of the Imperium and $356 for Necron Dynasties. Those line up with what I saw on eBay.

Notice the Necron spread: $250 on Oct 8 against $335+ on Oct 6. Sellers who listed before the news are asking more than buyers now pay, which is the first sign of the market repricing.

Why a reprint matters

A reprint changes supply, not demand. A sealed precon that sells for 4x to 6x retail is priced on scarcity. Once new copies are coming, the scarcity premium is the part at risk. The deck contents don't change, so the floor is whatever people will pay to play the deck. The singles inside, like the Commander legends and Warhammer-art reprints, are what holds value.

Two things limit the damage:

  1. "Small" is doing a lot of work. If the run is only enough for a fraction of stores, many players still can't get a deck at retail.
  2. Retail price may be higher than $59.99. TheGamer points out that recent Commander decks based on outside IP have cost more. A higher MSRP raises the new floor.

I can't source a specific price drop, so I won't quote one. It's reasonable to expect softening between now and release, and impossible to say by how much.

Fee math if you sell

eBay's Collectible Card Games rate is 13.25% up to $7,500 per item plus $0.40 per order over $10 (eBay selling fees). On a $300 sale:

  • Fee: $39.75 + $0.40 = $40.15
  • Left before shipping and your cost: about $259.85

A sealed deck ships in a small box, so budget a few dollars for protection. That makes this a thin-margin exit unless you bought near retail.

Our take: flip, hold or pass

This is analysis, not a promise.

  • Own one sealed, bought at or near retail: the sell-before-supply argument is strong. You're selling at 4x to 5x with a confirmed supply increase on the way. Selling into the news is reasonable. Holding for a possible "short supply" outcome is a bet.
  • Own one sealed, bought at $250+: the gap between your cost and a possible reprint-era price is the risk. Pricing close to current sold comps and moving it beats waiting.
  • Considering buying at today's prices: pass until Wizards announces price, date and print run. Those three facts decide the number.
  • Singles: the cards inside are worth watching separately. A deck reprint can pull singles down if the deck is the cheapest way to get them.

None of this is risk free. There is no seller-side guarantee that prices fall or hold.

What to watch

  • Wizards' official announcement of price and date
  • Distributor listings and retailer preorders appearing
  • Whether the Collector's Edition is included
  • eBay sold prices for each deck over the next two weeks
