Barbie Día de Muertos Catrina Doll: Flip or Hold?

· 4 min read · By the Friends & Family team

Mattel put the Calavera Catrina Barbie on sale for $100 to Barbie Club 59 members only, and it was gone fast. Our community and members bought it, and eBay sales on launch day already ran $200 to $325.

The Barbie Signature Día de Muertos Calavera Catrina Doll (JJX98) is a $100 collector doll that sold through Mattel Creations to Barbie Club 59 members only, with a limit of 2 per customer. Short version: it sold out, our community and members bought it, and on launch day it was selling on eBay for about $200 to $325, with the middle of the pack around $240. That is roughly double retail on paper, though eBay prices on launch day don't always last.

What the Calavera Catrina doll is

Mattel's page describes the doll as "an elegant doll homage" to La Catrina for Día de Muertos. Here's what's confirmed:

  • Product: Barbie Signature Día de Muertos Calavera Catrina Doll, item JJX98
  • Price: $100
  • Who could buy it: Barbie Club 59 members on MattelCreations.com, from October 9 at 9:00 am PT to October 10 at 8:59 am PT, while supplies last
  • Limit: 2 per customer
  • Design: calavera face paint, an oversized hat with flowers, skeletal embroidery on the bodice, a two-tiered skirt with a skull-and-roses motif, lace and floral accents, and a lenticular calavera fan
  • Body: Curvy Model Muse body with articulated arms and long-fingernail hands
  • Included: a Certificate of Authenticity and a doll stand (the doll can't stand on its own)
  • Designers: doll by Angel Kent, packaging by Charis Ceniseroz, face sculpt by Heide

The page lists it as a pre-order and shows it as sold out. Mattel hasn't said how many were made, so treat any "limited run" number you see as unconfirmed.

What our community bought

Barbie drops reward people who show up at launch, and this one did. Our members were on it, and the wins landed in our #success channel through the day on October 9. Posts there included "54 dolls" and "206+ dolls" from separate members, plus plenty of smaller hauls. That is the point of the Discord: having the launch time and the link before the drop, not after.

What it's selling for on eBay

We checked eBay sold listings for the doll on October 9:

  • 28 sales that day, from $200 to $324.99
  • The middle of the pack was about $240, and most sales clustered between $222 and $250
  • Almost all of them were pre-orders and presales, since the dolls hadn't shipped yet. Titles said things like "PRESALE", "PREORDER" and "CONFIRMED ORDER"
  • A few UK sellers also sold at around $240 to $253 plus $32 to $44 shipping

Against $100 retail, that is a gap of about $100 to $140 per doll before fees. We left out a few unrelated sales from earlier dates that eBay's search mixed in.

The math

eBay's fees on a collectible like this run roughly 13% to 15% of the total sale (see reseller fees in 2026). Your cost is $100 plus tax, so call it about $108.

  • At $240: around $33 in fees leaves about $207, so roughly $100 profit before shipping.
  • At $200: around $28 in fees leaves about $172, so roughly $64 profit before shipping.

A boxed doll is bulky and fragile. Budget $10 to $20 to ship it safely.

Flip, hold or pass? Our take

Flip a few now: reasonable. Presale prices are good money for a $100 doll, and presales are easiest to sell while buyers are still hunting for one. If you were charged and the order is confirmed, cashing out part of your stock locks in a profit. Remember you are selling something that hasn't shipped, so only list what you actually have a confirmed order for.

Hold some: also reasonable. Collectors tend to buy Barbie Signature dolls once and keep them sealed, and supply for this one was walled off behind a membership. If the pre-order sales cool off after the first rush, the doll can still come back once shipping starts and the first reviews and unboxing photos show up.

What would change the call:

  1. A wider release. If Mattel or a retailer lists it for everyone, prices should fall toward retail.
  2. A restock or second wave. Mattel hasn't announced one.
  3. Shipping and damaged boxes. Box condition matters for collectors, so keep it sealed and check it on arrival.
