Wizards of the Coast is giving Secret Lair x MSCHF: The Zeta Set a second sale. On December 9, 2026, the set goes back on sale for a single 24-hour window, and every order placed in that window will be filled. Those orders are estimated to ship in the second half of 2027.
That's good news for players who got stuck in September's queue. It's bad news for anyone holding presales they planned to flip, and it has already hit eBay prices. Here's what changed, what original buyers can do before October 9, and how we'd approach it.
What Wizards announced
In "An Update on The Zeta Set Sale," posted October 1, Matthew Hodgins of the Secret Lair team explained what went wrong on September 2. An "external service disruption" early in the sale strained the whole system, and pausing the queue left thousands of people waiting about an hour and a half with little information.
He didn't call the sellout a win. In his words: "A sale isn't a success just because inventory hits zero."
The fix:
- December 9, 2026: The Zeta Set goes back on sale for one 24-hour window
- Everyone who orders in that window will get it (a print-to-demand run)
- Shipping: estimated for the second half of 2027
- Original orders still ship first, before anything from the December window
- Original buyers can cancel by submitting a support ticket by October 9, 2026, "No explanation needed"
Wizards hasn't posted the December price or a purchase limit yet. The original sale was $19.92 per pack with a limit of 12 per person, and outlets like EDHREC and TheGamer expect the same, but that isn't confirmed.
What The Zeta Set is
The Zeta Set is a Secret Lair collaboration with MSCHF, the art collective behind a lot of viral products. It's styled like Magic's early-'90s playtest cards, printed to look like photocopies. From Wizards' original announcement:
- Price: $19.92 per Zeta Booster (a nod to 1992)
- Seven cards per pack: 3 commons, 2 uncommons, 1 wildcard and 1 rare or mythic
- Card pool: 121 cards, from Alpha classics to modern Commander staples
- Treatments: standard photocopy, Photocopy Negative (10% of cards) and Color Banding (5% of cards)
- Wildcard odds: 60% common, 30% uncommon, 7.5% rare, 2.5% mythic
- Rare slot: 75% rare, 25% mythic
Common cards from The Zeta Set also affect Pauper legality, which Wizards covered separately.
Because it's a random pack, the value swings a lot. Draftsim's value report called the packs "an absolute gamble" and named Chrome Mox (about $150+), Mana Echoes and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth (about $60 each) among the top cards. Those figures came out around launch, so treat them as a rough guide.
Original orders: shipping dates and the October 9 deadline
The Secret Lair product page says shipping begins November 5 for the original orders. TheGamer and Resell Calendar report November 5 for North America and December 8 for the UK and Europe, and TheGamer notes those dates could still change.
The October 9 cancel option matters because it's unusual. Secret Lair's standard rule for the US store is that "all purchases are final at the time of sale," and preorders normally can only be canceled before you're charged. This time, Wizards is letting original buyers out with a support ticket, but only until October 9.
If you're holding packs you planned to sell, that's the decision in front of you this week: sell the presale, hold the packs or cancel.
What eBay buyers are paying now
We checked eBay sold listings on October 2. Nearly every sale was a presale for November shipping. The drop after the announcement is clear:
Single packs:
- Mid-September: mostly $60 to $76, with one at $86.82 on September 7
- September 26 to 30: $59.98 to $69.00
- October 1, after the announcement: $39.50 to $45.00
12-pack lots:
- September 12 to 13: mostly $787 to $850, with one at $960
- September 28 to 30: $610 to $650
- October 1: one sold for $430
That's roughly a third off single-pack prices in a day, and almost half off the September highs for a full set of 12. Prices were already sliding before the news, and October 1 has only a handful of sales so far, so the floor may not be set yet.
The fee math
eBay's final value fee for Collectible Card Games is 13.25% of the total sale (up to $7,500), plus $0.40 per order over $10.
- One pack at $40: about $5.70 in fees leaves $34.30, or about $14 over the $19.92 price
- 12 packs at $430: about $57.38 in fees leaves $372.62, or about $134 over the $239.04 you paid
That's before the sales tax you paid, your shipping and supplies. eBay figures its fee on the full amount the buyer pays, including shipping and tax, so your real margin depends on how you list. Secret Lair's product page offers free US shipping on orders over $99, so a full 12-pack order shouldn't have paid shipping on the way in.
Even at today's prices, there's still a profit on paper. It's just much smaller than it was two weeks ago.
Why the reprint changes the math
Secret Lair has done this before. Odds and Ends, the Secret Lair Commander deck that went on sale September 28, used the same "every order in 24 hours gets filled" model, and first-wave copies sold for about $200 against a $149.99 price. We covered that in our Odds and Ends breakdown.
The Zeta Set is different because the first sale was limited and sold out. Its eBay prices were built on scarcity. A print-to-demand window in December means anyone who wants packs can get them at retail, just with a long wait. The 2027 shipping date is the main thing keeping November-shipping packs worth more than retail.
Sell, hold or cancel?
This is our analysis, not a promise.
Sell: If you bought to flip, the clock matters. November-shipping packs are the only ones anyone can get in 2026, and that edge shrinks as December 9 gets closer. Price off sold listings, not asking prices. If you sell a presale, you're on the hook if your order is delayed or canceled.
Hold: If you wanted to open them, or you like the playtest look, keep your packs. The value is in what you pull, and the random treatments mean some packs will be worth far more than others. A much bigger second print run makes a long sealed hold harder to call.
Cancel: If you bought only to resell and don't want to deal with a falling market, the October 9 cancel is a clean exit at no cost. Just remember it's a one-way door: if you cancel, the December window is your only way back in at retail.
Pass on chasing: If you missed September, there's no reason to pay eBay prices now. You'll be able to order at retail on December 9.
Vinch's take
Vinch, who covers Magic for us, flagged the update to our Magic members the day it went live and pointed out the 2027 shipping date for new orders. In mid-September, before the reprint news, he told members the Zeta presales were selling for about three times retail. After the announcement, he said he still plans to buy more in December. That's his opinion, not a recommendation.
