Silent Hill Short Message Deluxe PS5: $69.99 Flip?

· 4 min read · By the Friends & Family team

A game that has been free on PS5 since 2024 is getting a $69.99 disc, and it is the only disc there will ever be. Pre-orders have closed, but listings are already selling well above retail. Here is what is in the box and what could go wrong.

Silent Hill: The Short Message Deluxe Edition is the first physical release of the free PlayStation 5 game, made by Limited Run Games (LRG #216). It costs $69.99, and pre-orders ran from July 10 to August 9, 2026. It is not scheduled to ship until 2027.

The game itself is still a free download on the PlayStation Store. What buyers are paying for is the disc and the extras. This one is a clean example of a limited, one-time physical run.

What is in the Deluxe Edition

Per Limited Run Games and press coverage:

  • The PS5 game disc. LRG says there is no standard edition, so the disc is only available in this bundle.
  • A set of art cards with Maya's artwork. Siliconera counts 10 cards, while other outlets just say "art cards", so treat the exact number as reported.
  • An art poster of the Sakura Head creature.
  • An acrylic sakura blossom keychain.
  • An individually numbered certificate of authenticity.

Limited Run has not published an edition size that we could find. Do not assume a specific print number.

Release date and timing

  • Pre-orders: July 10 to August 9, 2026, on the Limited Run Games site (confirmed by LRG's own announcement and by Push Square and Siliconera).
  • Ship window: Siliconera reports an expected Q1 2027 release. Our releases page lists the ship window as March 1 to June 30, 2027. LRG ship dates for limited runs often slip, so treat the date as an estimate.

Why it matters for resale

  • It is the only disc. There is no retail copy. Anyone who wants the game on a shelf has to buy this exact bundle or pay someone who did.
  • Sealed collector-edition demand. Limited Run pre-orders with a closed window and a numbered certificate are the kind of item collectors chase after the window shuts.
  • Early resale is above retail. Our releases page shows recent completed eBay sales averaging $196 across 7 sales as of October 26, 2026, against a $69.99 retail price. That is a small sample, and these are pre-release listings, since nothing has shipped yet.
  • The reaction is mixed. Several outlets called the price steep for a roughly two-hour game that is free digitally. That criticism cuts both ways. It lowers casual demand, but it also means the buyers who did pre-order are committed collectors.

Risks and the case against

  • You may not be able to buy at retail anymore. The pre-order window closed August 9. We could not confirm whether any stock is left on LRG's site, so check the listing before assuming anything.
  • Your cash is tied up for months. If you pre-ordered, the item will not ship until 2027. If you are buying a pre-release listing on eBay, you are paying a premium before the disc exists.
  • The game is free. Anyone who just wants to play it can download it today. Your buyer pool is collectors of the disc and the extras, not players.
  • A 7-sale average is thin. Pre-release listings can be a handful of early buyers, and prices can fall once the item ships and sellers list at once.
  • Shipping delays. Limited Run ship dates can move. A longer wait means more time for the premium to fade.
  • Fees and shipping eat margin. Work out the net before you list. Our eBay seller fees calculator and reseller fees guide show how.

Flip, hold or pass

This is analysis, not a promise.

  • Flip: If you already hold a pre-order and want out, the early prices are well over retail. The tradeoff is selling an item you have not received, so check eBay's rules for pre-release listings before you list.
  • Hold: If you are a Silent Hill collector. A sealed Deluxe Edition with the certificate is the kind of piece that is usually kept, and you avoid the risk of the premium fading.
  • Pass: Buying a pre-release listing at a big premium just to flip it. You pay now, wait months, and the gap you paid for is the thing that can disappear.
