Walmart's latest Collectibles Draw isn't only Pokémon. It also includes two Magic: The Gathering Reality Fracture products: single Collector Boosters and the 12-pack Collector Booster Box. Walmart lists the drawing as starting today, September 30, at 2:00 PM PT (5:00 PM ET), two days before Reality Fracture releases on October 2.
Both products are priced above Wizards of the Coast's MSRP, and that changes the math more for Magic than it does for Pokémon. Here are the numbers.
What's in the drawing
The Magic items and prices on Walmart's Collectibles Draw page when we checked on September 30:
| Product | Walmart price | MSRP |
|---|---|---|
| Reality Fracture Collector Booster | $31.97 | $26.99 |
| Reality Fracture Collector Booster Box (12 packs) | $383.64 | $323.88 (12 × $26.99) |
Walmart's box price works out to exactly $31.97 per pack, so you don't save anything by buying the box. You pay about $60 over MSRP for the box.
Wizards' "Collecting Reality Fracture" article lists what's in each 15-card Collector Booster: foil commons and uncommons, a foil rare or mythic, three Booster Fun rares or mythics (one of them foil), a foil land, and an art card or foil token. The chase card is a serialized double rainbow foil Bloodline Recollector. Wizards says there are 500 of them across all languages and that one appears in less than 1% of Collector Boosters.
Walmart's drawing page also had Pokémon 30th Celebration products. We covered those in the Walmart 30th Celebration drawing article.
How Walmart's drawings work
Walmart's rules, from its draw page:
- Entry is free with a Walmart account, and you can enter each drawing once.
- Your address, payment and quantity are locked when you enter, and you can't cancel an entry.
- Winners are picked at random after entries close. Walmart may remove entries it thinks are fraudulent or abusive.
- Walmart places the order for you automatically if you're picked, and only charges you if the order goes through.
- Canceling after you win: you "may be able to cancel" if the order is still eligible and hasn't been fulfilled.
- Returns: drawing items "may not be returnable." Plan to keep what you win.
What Reality Fracture sold for on eBay
We checked eBay sold listings on September 30. The set isn't out until October 2, so these are mostly presales.
- Collector Booster Box: most sales were between $399 and $489 on September 29 and 30.
- Collector Booster (single pack): mostly $44.99 to $63.95 from September 27 to 30.
Presale prices for a new Magic set often move once boxes reach stores and people start opening them. The price of a box depends on what the cards inside are worth, and players are only starting to see that.
The fee math
eBay's fee for Collectible Card Games is 13.25% of the total sale up to $7,500, plus $0.40 per order over $10. Before sales tax, shipping and supplies:
- Collector Booster Box: to get back Walmart's $383.64, you'd need to sell for about $442.70. A $430 sale, in the middle of this week's range, leaves about $372.63. That's about $11 less than you paid.
- Single Collector Booster: a $45 sale leaves about $38.64, about $6.67 over $31.97. A $52 sale leaves about $44.71, about $12.74 over.
So the box only makes money at the top of this week's presale range, and that's before you pay sales tax on the $383.64 or ship a box.
Flip, hold or pass?
This is our analysis, not a promise.
Flip: Single packs have a small profit at this week's prices. The box doesn't. At Walmart's price, a box flip only works if presale prices stay near the top of their range, and new sets rarely do that in their first week.
Hold: A box from Walmart costs about $60 more than one at MSRP. If you want Reality Fracture sealed for the long term, compare prices with your local game store and other retailers before you use Walmart's drawing to buy it.
Pass: If you only want a flip, the box is the one to pass on. Entering is free, but once you win you can't cancel your entry and you may not be able to return the order, so only enter for a quantity you'd be fine holding.
What about the Secret Lair Bundle?
The Reality Fracture Secret Lair Bundle isn't in this drawing, but it's the Reality Fracture product collectors are watching. Wizards lists its MSRP at $89.99. It has 6 Play Boosters, 2 Collector Boosters, 2 foil Secret Lair Bundle promo cards, 20 foil lands and a spindown die. Draftsim reports it releases October 23. Wizards' collecting article didn't list a separate date, so treat that as reported.
Walmart's listing for the bundle showed $109.97 (about $20 over MSRP) and said Not Available when we checked on September 30. On eBay, presale bundles sold for $146.71 to $185 between September 26 and 30. A $175 sale leaves about $151.41 after fees, about $41 over Walmart's price.
