What to sell on eBay, for a beginner, comes down to one question: what sells for more than it costs you, after fees and shipping? You don't need a warehouse or a niche. You need one item you can buy at a known price, a recent eBay sold price for the exact same item, and enough gap between them to survive the fees. This guide walks through eight categories we track every week, with real numbers, and ends with a way to pick your first item.
Every sold figure below is the average of the ten most recent eBay completed sales (fewer where noted) that our team recorded, with the date. Many are presales of items that haven't shipped yet, so they can change. Gaps are before eBay fees, shipping and tax. Nothing here is a promise of profit.
How to choose what to sell on eBay (the 5-question test)
Before the list, here is how we decide whether something is worth selling. If you can't answer yes to most of these, skip it.
- Is there a known cost? You can name what you paid or what it retails for.
- Does it sell on eBay? Searching the exact name with Sold items ticked shows real completed sales, not only listings.
- Is the gap bigger than the fees? eBay's fees page lists 13.6% plus $0.40 per order for most categories (checked October 27, 2026), and the rate can differ by category. On a $38 sale that is about $5.57 before shipping.
- Is it hard to get? Limited runs, one-time drops and sold-out items hold a gap. Items that restock constantly don't.
- Can you ship it safely? Sealed boxes, records and consoles each need real packing, which costs money and time.

Most of these items haven't shipped yet, so those averages are presale prices. The releases page shows the ship date and the latest sold figure for each.
1. Sealed trading card boxes
Sealed boxes are the classic beginner category because the product is standardized: every copy of a hobby box is identical, so the sold price is easy to compare. The Cosmic Chrome Baseball hobby box lists at $489.99 and presales averaged $965. The cheaper end works too: the $75 Garbage Pail Kids box averaged $139. We walk through that purchase step by step in how to make money selling trading cards on eBay. Also see our Cosmic Chrome Baseball price breakdown and Flagship Basketball hobby box ($169.99 retail, $226 recorded average on October 26).
Watch out for: presale rules, crushed corners in shipping, and prices that settle once supply arrives.
2. Limited vinyl records
Numbered pressings and one-time store exclusives can sell for many times list price, because the supply is fixed. The Zach Bryan EP is limited to 5,000 copies at $50 and presales averaged $435. The Suki Waterhouse Milk Teeth exclusive was limited to 1,000 copies at $34, with presales around $85. For the full method, read how to make money selling vinyl on eBay and our Suki Waterhouse vinyl breakdown. The GTA VI vinyl ($124.98 retail, $212 recorded average) shows a bigger-ticket version.
Watch out for: warped records, damaged sleeves, and presale shipping windows.
3. Video game collector's editions, consoles and controllers
Collector's editions with statues, steelbooks and artbooks, plus limited consoles and controllers, tend to sell out at retail and move on eBay. The Xbox X25 console at $899.99 had a recorded sold average of $1,634, and the GTA DualSense at $84.99 averaged $127. Collector's editions we have covered include Metro 2039 ($299.99, $664 average from 5 sales on October 14) and Final Fantasy VII Revelation ($719 average on October 26). Our Xbox X25 breakdown has the details, and how to sell video games on eBay covers condition grades and shipping.
Watch out for: large boxes cost more to ship, and a console that doesn't turn on is a costly return.
4. Hot Wheels Red Line Club cars
RLC cars are cheap to buy and light to ship, which makes them a gentle way to learn. But the margins vary a lot, and this is where the "is the gap bigger than the fees?" test matters. The Ferrari F40 ($50) averaged $139. The Pontiac J2000 ($33) averaged $38: after eBay's fee on a $38 sale, that is a loss before you even pay for shipping. Our Transformers Bumblebee breakdown ($65 retail, $101 recorded average) shows a middle case.
Watch out for: RLC membership requirements, per-person limits, and cars that barely beat retail.
5. Magic: The Gathering sealed product
Limited Secret Lair decks and collector boosters have a standing secondary market. The Hatsune Miku Commander deck at $149.99 had a recorded average of $253. See the Miku deck resale math.
Watch out for: reprints, which can pull prices down quickly.
6. Pokémon sealed product
Elite Trainer Box presales for the upcoming Delta Reign set averaged $162 across ten sales on October 26. Sets rotate fast, so check the sold price on release week and again a month later.
7. LEGO retired and exclusive sets
LEGO is a staple of reselling, and we cover new drops as they appear, such as the LEGO Black Friday 2026 mystery set. We haven't recorded a sold average for that set yet, so we're not putting a number on it.
8. Things you already own
The lowest-risk first sale is something you already have: games, a spare console, old cards, books. You can't lose purchase money you already spent, and you learn the listing, packing and shipping process. Price it from sold listings of the exact item in the same condition, and be honest about wear.
Where to start if you've never sold on eBay
- Open your account and set up payouts (account setup guide).
- Pick one category from the list that you actually understand.
- Search the exact product on eBay with Sold items ticked and write down the ten most recent prices and the range, not the best one.
- Run the fee math with our eBay seller fees guide: sale price plus shipping, minus the fee, minus your cost.
- Start with one item, ideally one you own or can get at a known price, list it with clear photos, ship it with tracking, and record what you really made.
